Through IT projects, we improve efficiency and, in turn, benefits business and an organisation gets more capacity to address larger volumes with the same resources and results in revenue gains.
Healthcare Global Enterprises (HCG), India's largest provider of cancer care, is at the forefront of the battle against cancer. Through its network of 18 comprehensive cancer centres spread across India, HCG has brought advanced cancer care to the doorstep of millions of people.
The organisation has grown rapidly and is now the leader in cancer care, managing a network of 19 cancer care centres pan-India. Each centre is provided with a business system, management expertise and capital resources to bring patient focused, state-of-the-art cancer care to new regions.
To stay ahead of the curve and maintain its leadership, the Group needs to stay ahead on the technology front. This is when Arun Goyal, CIO, Healthcare Global Enterprises decided to deploy EMR (Electronic Medical Records), RIS-PACS and automation of home service for sample collection. A Radiology Information System (RIS) is a networked software system for managing medical imagery and associated data. RIS is useful for tracking radiology imaging orders and billing information and was used at HCG in conjunction with PACS to manage image archives, record-keeping and billing.
HCG is committed to creating an environment that fosters professional and personal achievements of every person who crosses the threshold of HCG centre. And by sharing these achievements across the network, the accomplishments of each centre, each physician and each hospital are further heightened. Ultimately, the patients are the beneficiaries of these achievements with every accomplishment bringing HCG a step closer to its goal of longer, better lives for patients and their families.
“All projects mentioned above resulted in increased efficiency, business benefits and incremental revenue,” opines Goyal.
However, the deployment of such large-scale projects was not easy. “None of the IT projects could be successful without involving the stakeholders as their involvement since the beginning of the project makes it easy to implement a project,” feels Goyal.
Moreover, managing legacy systems and making them work with the new ones was creating other issues. “This has always been the challenge - to deal with legacy systems while introducing latest technology or product. As far as possible, we transfer such legacy to either smaller places or if possible use it as backup and replace with new ones,” explains Goyal. He adds the global recession forced CXOs to become multitaskers. Hence, the CIOs who could move away from being technology decision-makers have been able to sustain and grow further to contribute in the business.
“They need to be exceptional communicators so that respective automation ideas can get communicated well to the board and get executed well. Being effective team leaders, which makes them trusted partners of top management, is how they are being perceived as drivers of business value in prevailing situation,” he puts in, adding his long-term goal is to implement enterprise solution and synchronise all application and provide mobile application to internal and external customers.
